Syndromic Scoliosis Care in Edina, MN

Scoliosis caused by a variety of other medical syndromes.

_

This is a very broad category, a bit of a catch-all in fact.  When scoliosis is the result of some other syndrome, then it can be said to be a “syndromic scoliosis”.

There are a number of different named “syndromes” which have, as one potential manifestation, scoliosis.  Neurofibromatosis which is a genetic disorder that causes tumors to form on nerve tissue, is one example.  Other examples in this category include such syndromes as osteochondrodystrophy (dwarfism), Marfan Syndrome, Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, osteogenesis imperfecta, and Down’s syndrome (trisomy 21).  There is nothing that connects this disparate group of syndromes other than the fact that they all can cause scoliosis.

  • Syndromic scoliosis encompasses scoliosis that is associated with other syndromes.
  • Dwarfism, Down’s Syndrome, Marfan Syndrome,  and others can cause scoliosis

Just as there is little in common with the various syndromes that can cause scoliosis in this category, there is no singular therapeutic approach.  At ScoliTech we have seen many patients with scoliosis who did not even know that they had some of the syndromes in this category.  A full history and evaluation are an essential part of what we do.
